Electrolytes

Worth a look if you sweat a lot, train in heat, or feel foggy after workouts.

What they are

Electrolytes are minerals — mainly sodium, potassium, and magnesium — that carry electrical charge and are essential for muscle contraction, nerve signaling, and fluid balance. You lose them through sweat.

Why people look into it

People training frequently, sweating heavily, or exercising in heat sometimes find plain water alone doesn't fully address how they feel during or after a session. Electrolyte replacement is a common thing to look into in that situation.

What the research generally says

The role of sodium and other electrolytes in hydration and exercise performance is well established, particularly for longer or more intense sessions and hot conditions. For shorter, lower-intensity activity, plain water is usually sufficient for most people.

How people typically approach it

Needs vary a lot based on how much and how salty someone's sweat is, which is individual. If you're training seriously in heat, a sports dietitian can help you figure out what actually fits your situation.
